On the evening of the 16th, northwest winds brought cold air across the Great Lakes. This triggered lake effect snow across much of northwest Lower Michigan. The heaviest snow occurred over Kalkaska county where 16 hour snowfall totals of around 10 inches were reported by late in the afternoon on the 17th.
