A strong cold front moved across Northern Michigan during the late evening hours of the 4th. Behind this cold front, arctic air quickly moved into the Great Lakes region. This triggered heavy lake effect snow across portions of northwest Lower Michigan. The snowfall began late in the evening on the 4th and continued through the afternoon hours of the 5th. By the afternoon of the 5th, 16-hour snowfall accumulations were around 10 inches across much of Otsego, western Charlevoix, western Antrim, northeastern Kalkaska and northwestern Crawford counties. Strong winds behind the frontal boundary also caused widespread blowing and drifting snow across all of Northern Michigan.
