Hail and Damaging Winds in Massachusetts, August 10, 2000

A long-lived supercell, which formed over eastern New York during the late evening of the 9th, strengthened as it moved across northern Connecticut and northern Rhode Island, where it caused wind damage and dropped large hail. The storm entered southeast Massachusetts during the early morning hours of the 10th, and caused damage in Bristol, Norfolk, Plymouth, and Dukes Counties.Damage was more widespread in Bristol County, where hail as large as golf balls fell in Norton and Easton, damaging several cars. In Norfolk County, the storm dropped dime size hail in Wrentham and also downed several large trees in Walpole, one of which fell onto a shed, destroying it. The supercell weakened as it entered Plymouth County, but there were still many reports of downed branches, wires, and small trees in West Bridgewater and Brockton. Dime size hail also fell in West Bridgewater. In all, about 18,000 electric customers in southeast Massachusetts were left without power.Other severe thunderstorms moved through south coastal Massachusetts and Marthas Vineyard closer to sunrise. Dime size hail was reported in Fairhaven, while large branches, wires, and one large tree were downed by thunderstorm winds in Edgartown.
