Flooding and Hail in Georgia, August 10 to 11, 2000

The Hall county 911 reported that a house was struck by lightning. However, no injuries were reported and the extent of the damage was unknown.

The Walker county 911 reported dime size hail.

The Rome News Tribune reported numerous trees and up to eight power lines down. One of the utility poles and some trees fell on a house at Herbert and Park streets.

The Walker county 911 center reported several trees and some power lines down. Most of the damage was concentrated in the Chickamauga area and just east of Chickamauga near the Catoosa county line along U.S. Highway 27.

The Catoosa county 911 center reported that several trees were down in Fort Oglethorpe, especially on Chestnut Street.

The Floyd county Emergency Management Director and the public both reported dime size hail on the west side of Rome.

The Polk county Emergency Management Director and local ham radio operators reported dime size hail in Cedartown and west of Rockmart in Fish Creek.

Several reports of dime size hail were received from the public from Winston north and west toward the Carroll county border near Villa Rica.

An amateur radio operator reported quarter size hail.

The public reported dime size hail in Woodstock and dime to quarter size hail in Holly Springs.

The public provided numerous reports of dime to quarter size hail.

Numerous reports of dime to quarter size hail were received from the public across the northern and eastern portions of the county from just north of Newnan to Sharpsburg.

The public reported street flooding on U.S. Highway 278.

An Atlanta television station meteorologist, as well as the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, reported that a 19-year old male was injured by lightning while talking on the telephone. The surge of electricity burned the teenager's hands and feet, but the injuries were not reported to be serious.

The public reported dime size hail on Georgia 400 southeast of Dawsonville near the town of Lumpkin.

The Dawson county 911 center reported dime size hail on Georgia 400 in the city of Lumpkin.

The Cherokee county Sheriff's department reported that trees and power lines were down throughout the county.

The Atlanta Journal and Constitution and the Cherokee county Sheriff's department reported that eight homes were set on fire by lightning. The fires were concentrated in Canton, Holly Springs, and Cherokee. Three of the homes were so badly damaged that they were declared to be uninhabitable.

Several reports of dime to quarter size hail were received from the public from just west of Gainesville, near the Lakeshore Mall on the Dawsonville Highway, Georgia Highway 53, eastward to and throughout the city of Gainesville.

The Hall county 911 center reported that two trees, blown down by thunderstorm winds, had caused considerable damage to two homes. One tree fell on the roof of one home causing considerable roof damage. The other also fell on the roof of a home, but broke several windows out as well.
