An Alberta Clipper storm system moved through the upper Midwest beginning during the early morning hours. The system pulled warm air northward into the area, which created ideal conditions for a mix of precipitation. Areas along and north of the Interstate 80 corridor were impacted during the event. North of the U.S. Highway 20 corridor, colder temperatures allowed most of the precipitation to fall in the form of snow, with amounts around one inch common in Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties. To the south of Highway 20, warmer temperatures provided for a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Police believe slick roads contributed to an accident on Interstate 80 west of Princeton that killed one person and injured another. The slick conditions also caused numerous other accidents across the area, especially on lesser-traveled roads.
