The White county 911 center, along with a former National Weather Service employee living in the area, reported several trees down, with others snapped off above ground level
The White county 911 center reported some street flooding in Cleveland.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, along with the Gwinnett Daily Post, reported that lightning struck 19 homes, 2 apartments, an office park, and sparked several grass fires across the county. The office park, located in Lilburn on Beaver Ruin Road, sustained minor damage when the attic was set on fire. Of the 19 homes struck, significant damage was done to one on Cold Springs Drive in Lilburn. The entire attic of the home was engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived. There were also two lightning related injuries in the county. A 41-year old female was injured while pumping gas at a Texaco station on Five Forks Trickum Road. She was barely able to move her arm for some time thereafter. A 14-year old girl was injured when lightning struck the metal rail on which she was leaning. Immediately, her hands and feet tingled and her head hurt. However, neither of the injuries was reported to be serious as the lightning strikes appeared to be secondary. The fire department reported that they received 97 lightning strike related calls during the 3 1/2 hours of thunderstorm activity.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported that lightning started a fire on Newbridge Trace in the northern part of the Brookhaven community.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported that 3 to 4 inches of rain in a 2 to 3 hour period resulted in significant flooding. Forty-eight families had to be evacuated from an apartment complex on Memorial Drive in Decatur when water from Sugar Creek spilled over its banks and into the apartments. Flash flooding was also reported in Decatur. Road closures were required on Commerce Drive at Clairmont Road and College Avenue at Candler Road. On Electric Avenue, an unoccupied car was found with flood waters clear up to the roof. At Agnes Scott College in Decatur, East College Avenue was flooded as well.
The Marietta Daily Journal reported street flooding on several streets in Marietta and Smyrna. Allgood Road in Marietta was closed when a nearby creek flooded the road with 3 to 4 feet of water. Cole Street was also closed as it was flooded by 3 feet of water. In Smyrna, flooding occurred on Windy Hill Road and Reed Road, with a partial closure required on Windy Hill Road.
The Marietta Daily Journal reported that lightning started a fire in an empty house that had just been built and was for sale. The house was unoccupied at the time of the incident. A firefighter was injured in the process of extinguishing the fire.
