Flooding and Hail in Georgia, July 12, 2000

The Fayette county 911 center reported dime size hail on Bernhard Road.

The La Grange Daily News reported numerous trees down throughout Troup county, particularly in the La Grange area. Trees were down on power lines and blocking some roads. There was also a report of a very large tree limb, nearly one-half of the tree, falling on a house which damaged the roof and took out a fence. The storm damage was concentrated in the Lafayette Parkway, Country Club Road, and Mill Village areas of La Grange, but numerous other city streets were also affected.

The Troup county fire deparment, located on Hamilton Road in La Grange, reported dime size hail to the La Grange Daily Newspaper.

The Fayette county 911 center and the public reported trees and power lines down along Harp Road south of Fayetteville in the Surrey Park subdivision, where a basketball goal was also reported down. On Hilo Road, about 3 miles southeast of Fayetteville, several large tree limbs were blown down. Further south, trees were also down near Starrs Mill.

The public reported some trees down and several shingles blown off the roof of a house.

The Spalding county 911 center reported powerlines down in the southern part of Griffin.

The Twiggs county 911 center reported trees down on U.S. Highway 80 at Dry Branch.

The Lamar county 911 center and the public reported many trees down across the western half of Lamar county, particularly on Weldon Lake Road and Gordon Road.

The Butts county 911 center reported that a tree knocked down by thunderstorm winds caused a power line to fall.

The Gordon county 911 center reported lots of trees and power lines down across the county. Damage to a home was incurred in one instance.

The public reported dime size hail near Barnesville.

The Dublin Courier Herald reported that within a 2 hour period a nearly stationary thunderstorm knocked trees down on several county roads and power lines in Laurens county. Lloyd, Hubert, and Brookdale Drive were all blocked by trees. In addition, a tree fell on a vehicle in Rentz. The downed power lines, along with numerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, knocked the power out to most of the county during the afternoon and evening.

The Dublin Courier Herald reported lightning set fire to several homes in the Trinity Hills area of Dublin and just south of East Dublin near Georgia Highway 199. Apparently the fires were estinguished before major damage was incurred. The lightning also set fire and damaged a power pole on Blackshear's Ferry Road.

The Dublin Courier Herald reported that over 3 inches of rain received in a short period of time caused several problems with high water on Dublin streets. One motorist reported water up to the floorboard in his car and there were several other reports received of water coming halfway up the tires of cars.

The Monroe county 911 center reported trees down at High Falls and Plant Shear, a Georgia Power generating facility near Lake Juliette.

A meteorologist from WMAZ television in Macon, Georgia, relayed a report of golfball size hail from Dublin.

The Emanuel county 911 center reported trees down across the west half of Emanuel county from Summertown, to Swainsboro, to Nunez.

The Macon county Sheriff reported trees and power lines down.

The Emanuel county 911 center reported street flooding in the western part of the county.

The Johnson county 911 center reported trees down on county roads across the county.

The public reported dime size hail.

The Walton county 911 center reported telphone lines down in Loganville.

The Newnan Times Herald reported tree limbs down throughout Coweta county on roads and power lines. In one instance a tree limb knocked a power line down onto a minivan on Smokey Road southwest of Newnan While the car sustained considerable damage, no injuries were reported.
