Hail and Damaging Winds in Georgia, July 11, 2000

The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported that a 64 year-old man was struck by lightning while playing golf at the Cartersville Country Club. He sustained a burn on his foot where the lightning bolt exited his body. He spent the night in the hospital and was released.

The Peach county 911 center reported quarter size hail.

A severe thunderstorm knocked trees down in several parts of the county. A trained spotter reported several trees down across highway 26 near Elko. He also reported 2 trees down and a building hit by lightning near Perry. In addition Houston county 911 reported trees down in Kathleen, and the Warner Robins Daily Sun Newspaper reported numerous trees down on Mount Zion Road off Georgia Highway 96.

The Pulaski county 911 center and the public reported trees down and some trees with broken limbs.

The Pulaski county 911 center reported quarter size hail.

The Dooly county 911 center reported trees down.

The Cordele Dispatch reported that a tree was blown down on a house on Lakeshore Drive at Lake Blackshear, causing considerable damage to the roof. In addition, lightning knocked down a tree on Coney road, causing it to block the road.

The Dooly county 911 center reported that a power pole was knocked down on Georgia Highway 27 at Drayton Road.

The Americus Times Recorder reported that two buildings at Powell Farms Dairy on Hooks Mill Road were demolished by thunderstorm winds. Damage to the buildings and farm machinery stored inside was estimated at $20,000. In addition, a cow inside the structure was injured by the debris. Other tree limbs were reported down by the Sheriff on Georgia Highway 27 near Lake Blackshear.

The Sumter county 911 center reported lightning set a power pole on fire.

Crisp county 911 reported 10 trees knocked down by thunderstorm winds.

The Telfair county 911 center reported trees down.

The Abbeville NWS Cooperative Observer reported that strong thunderstorm winds caused considerable damage in Abbeville. Numerous trees were toppled and two trailers were knocked over and damaged. The top was stripped off one of the trailers. The strong thunderstorm winds also picked up a car, with two occupants, traveling on a local road, and set it down in a resident's yard. No injuries were reported.

A Jonesboro newspaper reported two homes were struck by lightning. One home on Camanche Court was set on fire, while only smoke was found at the other house on Lull Water Circle.

The public reported dime size hail. In addition, the top of a 10 inch diameter pine tree was broken off.

The public reported nickel size hail.

The Milledgeville police reported dime size hail.

The Newton county 911 center reported that several trees were uprooted and that a funnel cloud was observed by the chief of police. In addition, the public reported that a roof was blown off a gas station.

The Washington county 911 center reported many trees down across the western half of the county.

The public reported a 50 foot pine tree was broken off about 20 feet above the ground. A dogwood tree was also blown down and several other tree limbs were reported down on the same property.

The Johnson county 911 center reported trees down countywide.

The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported lightning struck several homes, setting attic fires in some of them. One home on Forest Hills Drive in Norcross suffered significant damage, one on Sugargate Court near Lilburn sustained minor damage, and others in Snellville and Centerville suffered little damage. No injuries were reported.

The Rockdale Citizen reported that lightning struck the attic of a large home on Lake Rockaway Road. The house was completely destroyed by the resulting fire.

The Gwinnett county 911 center reported trees down from Norcross, to Duluth, to Lawrenceville.

The Rockdale Citizen reported that lightning struck a large storage shed in the 2000 block of Georgia Highway 20, just north of Rockdale Drive.
