Flash Flooding and Hail in Pennsylvania, April 9 to 10, 1999

Lightning struck a turn-of-the-century barn that served as a plumbing and heating business. Lightning struck the side of the building near a second-floor furnace room and burned through the barn's wood siding. Firefighters were able to save the building from all but minimal damage.

Thunderstorm winds downed several power lines across the city.

In the second lightning strike of the day in the town of Sewickley, lightning struck the chimney of a large brick home. The lightning strike caused heavy damage to the roof, prompting one fire official to comment "This is the worst (lightning strike) we've seen in years. It looks like the Air Force bombed it."

Thunderstorm rains produced flash flooding on Route 18 between Burgettstown and Hickory. Minor flooding continued across this area through the early morning hours of the 10th.

Heavy thunderstorm rains produced minor road flooding across the county.

Thunderstorms produced 1.66 inches of rain by the early afternoon hours, forcing Grimes Run to overflow its banks. Minor basement flooding was reported.

Heavy thunderstorm rains produced stream and road flooding in the southern suburbs of Pittsburgh. Flooding was reported at the intersection of Routes 837 and 51 in Pittsburgh's South Side. Minor flooding was also reported on Lewis Run Road in the Pleasant Hills area.

Heavy thunderstorm rains forced a tributary of Buffalo Creek out of its banks just east of Leasureville.

Over 1.5 inches of rain from thunderstorms produced minor flooding across the county. A portion of Freedom-Crider Road near Park Quarry Road was closed due to a small mudslide. Route 51 near Monaca was restricted to one lane by a mudslide. A mudslide was also reported on Route 68 near the Shippingport Bridge. Street flooding was reported in downtown Beaver. In addition, the Beaver County 911 Center received dozens of calls of flooded basements.

Thunderstorm rains produced several incidents of flash flooding across the county. Roadway flooding closed Route 136 and Arona Road in Arona Borough. A mud slide occurred in New Stanton on Thermo Village Road. Several roads were closed and mudslides were reported in Rostraver Township, with minor flooding also reported in the Norvelt and Mt. Pleasant areas. Flooding was reported along the Loyalhanna Creek near Latrobe. In addition, many reports of basement flooding were received from across the county.

Heavy rains from thunderstorms produced minor flooding in Elliotsville near Route 381. Minor flooding was also reported on Little Sandy Creek near Gibbon Glade and Meadow Run Creek along Route 381 north of Farmington.
