Rainfall continued to be scarce across much of western North Carolina through the month of September, prolonging the drought conditions which existed all summer. However, some areas in the piedmont picked up some rain from the remnants of Hurricane Dennis early in the month and from Hurricane Floyd itself two weeks later.

Rainfall continued to be scarce across much of western North Carolina through the month of September, prolonging the drought conditions which existed all summer. However, some areas in the piedmont picked up some rain from the remnants of Hurricane Dennis early in the month and from Hurricane Floyd itself two weeks later. Although this rain brought some relief, more wells ran dry and many more areas began mandatory water restrictions.
