Torrential downpours from thunderstorms dumped between 3 and 4 inches of rain in about 2 hours. This resulted in the closing of streets and highways throughout the county. One of the hardest hit areas was Highway 60 West in Morganfield, which was covered by an estimated two and a half feet of water at one point. This led to flooding of several businesses, including an auto body shop and a plumbing and electrical supply store. An equipment dealership suffered the loss of about 10 vehicles located on its lot. Elsewhere in Morganfield, major flooding occurred on North Morgan Street, which was closed near the Union County Shopping Center. Businesses along both sides of the street received extensive flooding. The first floor of a motel received severe damage, dislocating a number of guests. Several stores in the Union County Shopping Center, such as a video store and a restaurant, received water damage. A department store had a couple inches of water over the entire floor, resulting in over 3,000 dollars in lost merchandise.
