A cold front entered northwest Iowa during the afternoon hours. The airmass it moved into was very unstable with CAPE values near 7000 J/kg ahead of the front. Dew point temperatures were in the mid to upper 70s with surface temperatures in the mid 90s. Thunderstorms erupted in a very narrow line just ahead of the front. There was intense lightning with the storms and heavy rainfall, but generally no severe weather. Hail with the storms was generally pea size or smaller and winds generally under 30 MPH. One storm produced a downburst in Waukee, causing some damage as trees were knocked down in the town. The other problem with the storms was over the central into southwest counties as 2 to 5 inches of rain fall in a few hours time causing local urban and small stream flooding.
