An upper level disturbance moved southeast across Iowa during the day on the 23rd. The combination of the upper level system combined with the monsoonal flow over the state allowed thunderstorms to erupt during the afternoon hours.

An upper level disturbance moved southeast across Iowa during the day on the 23rd. The combination of the upper level system combined with the monsoonal flow over the state allowed thunderstorms to erupt during the afternoon hours. Though most of the storms fired up east of the Des Moines CWA, the southeast part of the CWA was clipped by some strong thunderstorms. A couple of cells moved through Lucas County. One produced high winds near Williamson causing tree damage there. Another moved into Lucas County a short time later. The storm built rapidly and at one point had a VIL of 72 kg/m/m The freezing level was near 15,000 feet, thus hail was not a major player with the storms. The storm did produce a downburst near the Lucas area that downed several power poles. Little other damage occurred with the storm.
