In response to heavy rainfall during the first week of April, the Big Muddy River rose above flood stage. Rainfall amounts during the first six days of the month ranged from one and one half to over 4 inches. At Murphysboro, where flood stage is 16 feet, the river crested at 26.6 feet on the 9th. This results in some minor flooding that affects houses just downstream of Bridge Street in Murphysboro. At Plumfield, where flood stage is 20 feet, the crest was 22.6 feet on the 7th. This results in minor flooding affecting mainly bottomland and surrounding low-lying areas. The river fell below flood stage at Plumfield by the 13th, but remained above flood stage at Murphysboro through the end of the month due to backwater from the flooded Mississippi RIver.
