High Wind in Alaska, November 11 to 14, 1999

An intense 960 mb low moved from the central Aleutians early Thursday to a position 120 miles south of Sand Point in a slightly weakened state late Friday morning. Strong northwest wind gusts were reported along the southwest side of the storm. Around Dutch Harbor, wind gusts reached a peak of 85 mph Saturday during the mid afternoon at the airport site, as williwas moved from Mount Ballyhoo toward Unalaska Bay.By early Friday, brisk northerly winds were reported across the Pribilof Islands. By midday Friday, the storm had weakened a bit and was located about 120 miles southeast of Chignik. Peak winds at Saint Paul reached close to 73 mph late Friday morning. At Saint George, wind gusts peaked at 85 mph just after 6pm Saturday. Wind gusts finally diminished below 55 mph there Sunday morning.By early Sunday, the storm had weakened and moved into the southern corner of the Gulf of Alaska. Still, very strong northwest wind gusts were reported through channelled areas of the western Alaska Peninsula. One report received from a boat anchored up near Unimak Island indicated gusts of 104 mph early Sunday morning.
