Hail in Texas, May 25, 1998

Supercell thunderstorms developed over western portions of the South Plains during the evening of the 25th and produced large hail and wind damage across Cochran, Yoakum, Terry, Lynn and Garza Counties. One of these supercell thunderstorms produced a weak tornado 3 miles south of the community of Draw in southeast Lynn County. The brief touchdown was reported by a Lubbock television station's chase crew. This storm originally developed near the state line, then moved east-southeast and hammered Tahoka with up to baseball-sized hail. Many homes and vehicles were damaged. Whiteface (Cochran County) was hit with high winds which knocked over a large tree onto a house and truck, and damaged two other roofs. Other damages included snapped power poles near Union and signs blown down in southwest Lynn County. Cotton crops were also damaged by the hail.Other isolated severe thunderstorms moved from the northern Big Country into the southern portions of the Rolling Plains and produced nickel- to golfball-sized hail in Stonewall County.
