A very dry pattern became established over southeast New Mexico and southwest Texas as the waning strong El Nino sent storm systems to other parts of the U.S. At the Midland/Odessa National Weather Service Office the rain total for April 1998 was 0.00" (not even a trace of precipitation). The month was very dry over the entire region with only a few stations reporting any measurable precipitation and those amounts were only around 1/10 inch.
