1998 was the warmest year on record in the state of New Jersey. Records on a statewide basis have been kept since 1895. The statewide yearly mean temperature of 55.5 degrees surpassed the previous record of 54.8 degrees set in 1949. The 1998 yearly mean temperature of 58.1 degrees at nearby Philadelphia International Airport tied 1931 and 1991 as the warmest year on record. Government temperature records have been kept in Philadelphia since 1874.
