High Wind in Kansas, May 19, 1998
An extended period of strong winds from collapsing thunderstorms downed trees and utility poles, especially in Lyon County. In Emporia storage sheds of several businesses were damaged or destroyed, the sales office of a business was damaged and windows of a car were shattered when a 30 foot section of an awning from a mall was thrown into it.

An extended period of strong winds from collapsing thunderstorms downed trees and utility poles, especially in Lyon County. In Emporia storage sheds of several businesses were damaged or destroyed, the sales office of a business was damaged and windows of a car were shattered when a 30 foot section of an awning from a mall was thrown into it. A strong wind gust overturned two semi-trailer trucks, injuring one of the drivers. Law enforcement also reported that several other more minor accidents also occurred along the Kansas Turnpike as a result of the winds. Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported in Diamond Springs, Wilsey, and Herington.
