The Big Muddy River, which had been above flood stage since mid June, crested at 23.8 feet at Murphysboro on the 4th. Flood stage at Murphysboro is 16 feet. Flooding was mainly confined to low-lying farm fields and parks near the river. Backwater from flooding on the Mississippi River contributed to the high levels on the Big Muddy River.
