A strong storm system in the northern Great Lakes Thursday morning (May 1, 1997) moved northeast up the St. Lawrence River Valley Thursday night. Scattered thunderstorms developed during the late afternoon and evening with locally heavy rain and gusty winds.A severe thunderstorm moved through West Charleston, VT (Orleans County) at approximately 645 PM EST. A mobile home sustained roof damage, two sheds were blown over and tree and utility pole damage was reported. Winds were estimated at 52 knots with this thunderstorm.Other reports of thunderstorm winds (with no damage) were:Chester, VT (Windsor County).....43 knots at 630 PM ESTSpringfield, VT (Windsor County).....43 knots at 640 PM ESTBrookfield, VT (Orange County)......31 knots at 650 PM EST.
