The evening of May 8, 1997 produced severe weather in several counties on the South Plains and over Hall County in the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. Golfball-sized hail hit the town of Slaton in SE Lubbock County breaking 40 windows at a local church and causing extensive roof damage at an elementary school.

The evening of May 8, 1997 produced severe weather in several counties on the South Plains and over Hall County in the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. Golfball-sized hail hit the town of Slaton in SE Lubbock County breaking 40 windows at a local church and causing extensive roof damage at an elementary school. Several car dealerships reported hail damage to numerous vehicles. Also, residential areas were extensively damaged. Golfball-sized hail also occurred in rural parts of Hall County and in western Yoakum County near the stateline.
