A quite rare event with a tornado watch issued primarily for the mountains of SW Texas and Far West Texas. An upper level low located near the northern Gulf of California at daybreak was moving into the region from the southwest and helped to add mid-level support for the development of severe thunderstorms.

A quite rare event with a tornado watch issued primarily for the mountains of SW Texas and Far West Texas. An upper level low located near the northern Gulf of California at daybreak was moving into the region from the southwest and helped to add mid-level support for the development of severe thunderstorms. A favorable vertical profile with SSE winds near the surface at 15-20 kt and a SW wind aloft at 40-45 kt gave a favorable shear. The storm that produced the tornado near the Hudspeth Co. line started in southwestern Hudspeth County about 20 miles west of Sierra Blanca and intensified rapidly into a supercell.
