Due to rapid snowmelt runoff and ice jamming, Oak Creek rose over its banks and a levee in the early morning hours of March 26th, flooding Wakpala. Oak creek rose over 5 feet in 12 hours and was the worst flooding since 1961.

Due to rapid snowmelt runoff and ice jamming, Oak Creek rose over its banks and a levee in the early morning hours of March 26th, flooding Wakpala. Oak creek rose over 5 feet in 12 hours and was the worst flooding since 1961. Over 100 people were evacuated from their homes for one to two weeks and had to be put in shelters. The school was flooded and heavily damaged. Some of the homes in Wakpala were a total loss.
