Severe thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours on the 5th produced damaging winds, hail up to tennis ball size, damaging lightning, and flash flooding.A lightning strike knocked down a tree, injured a woman and broke windows out of a house in Galax. A lightning strike injured a man in Stevens Creek and damaged electronic equipment in New Castle. Lightning started a fire which damaged a mobile home in Glade Hill.Thunderstorm winds downed tree limbs in Pilot, toppled trees in Moneta, Brookneal, three miles southeast of Cody, and across Charlotte County, knocked a tree on top of a house in Charlotte Court House, and broke off a section of a chimney 3 miles north of Moneta.Quarter size hail covered the ground in Rocky Mount. Nickel size hail covered the ground in Buchanan. Ping-pong size hail damaged vehicles and broke out windows in Rocky Mount. Hail up to half-dollar size damaged tobacco crops in the northern portion of Pittsylvania County. Hail up to half-dollar size damaged vehicles and homes from Gretna to 4 miles east of Gretna.A road was washed out by water from heavy rainfall 2.5 miles northwest of Brookneal.
