Damaging Wind in Virginia, June 9, 1996

Thunderstorms during the late morning and afternoon hours on the 9th produced two tornadoes, flash flooding and damaging winds.An F2 tornado briefly touched down 6 miles northeast of Burnt Chimney at 1445 EST. The tornado destroyed a nearly completed new frame house. Debris from the house was found up to 2 miles away. Large pieces of debris fell through 50 to 80 foot trees up to one-third mile away. Another tornado formed near Shady Grove and traveled north approximately one mile before dissipating. This F1 tornado snapped off and uprooted trees and downed power lines.Heavy rainfall flooded several homes, destroyed a home, resulted in evacuations and resulted in the closing of several roads along Blackberry Creek in the northwestern portion of Henry County. Heavy rainfall resulted in several creeks and streams leaving their banks and flooding nearby roads in Roanoke County, the eastern portion of Patrick County and in the western portion of Franklin County. There were several evacuations along Peters Creek Road in Roanoke County. Water was reported to be 12 to 18 inches deep in Rocky Mount in Franklin County. Thunderstorm winds broke off tree limbs 7.5 miles northeast of Burnt Chimney and damaged a barn and destroyed another barn in Blue Ridge.
