Damaging Wind in Virginia, June 24, 1996

Thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours on the 24th produced damaging winds, damaging lightning and hail up to golfball size.Thunderstorm winds knocked trees down across a road 6 miles southwest of Sinking Creek and 4 miles southwest of Buena Vista, downed trees in Sinking Creek, Paint Bank, and 3 miles east of Ferrum, broke off large tree limbs in Buchanan and Henry, downed trees and snapped off branches in Woolwine and knocked down several trees in the southeast portion of Roanoke County. Thunderstorm winds snapped off or uprooted numerous trees, knocked down power lines and tore shingles off of roofs from 3 miles south of Axton to 2 miles south-southeast of Axton and knocked down a chimney, tore a portion of a roof off, damaged another roof and damaged barns from 3 miles east of Volens to 4 miles east of Volens. Thunderstorm winds downed numerous trees in the western portion of Bedford County and in the eastern portion of Carroll County. Some of trees blocked roads for a time.Lightning knocked a tree onto a car in Covington, breaking out the windshield. Lightning started a fire which destroyed a home in Stuart.
