Thunderstorms during the late morning and early afternoon hours on the 2nd produced hail up to quarter size and damaging winds.Thunderstorm winds estimated up to 90 mph downed large trees, broke off tree limbs and tore shingles from roofs in Roanoke. Thunderstorm winds downed trees, power lines, and power poles and blew hay feeders around in Franklin County. In portions of Franklin County, the combination of wind gusts up to 90 mph and hail up to nickel size damaged tobacco, corn and wheat crops. Damage to crops was estimated around $500,000.
