Meanwhile further north on the line of thunderstorms, a severe thunderstorm moved through Salt Lake county. This storm moved right over downtown and made a direct hit on the state capitol building. A large 3rd floor window was blown-in prematurely ending a session of the state legislature. One lawmaker sustained injuries from the flying glass. A little further east in town, at the city cemetary, 4 large pine trees were knocked down. The University of Utah's Meteorology Department measured a wind gust of 65 mph (56 kts) with this severe thunderstorm. The combination of the heavy rains and strong, gusty winds caused several mud/rock slides southeast of Salt Lake City. Both the Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons were temporarily closed.
