A squall line, plus one or two isolated severe storms, moved from South Carolina into the North Carolina foothills and piedmont. Damage was mostly limited to downed trees and power lines but light structural damage was reported. In northern Mecklenburg county some outbuildings were destroyed and a farm animal killed. Trees fell onto homes near Shelby and power was out for thousands of customers all night.
