Thunderstorms in northwest and north-central North Carolina during the afternoon hours on the 11th produced hail up to dime size and damaging winds.Thunderstorm winds tore the roof off a house and a restaurant in Mount Airy. In addition, numerous trees were knocked down. Falling trees damaged a house and a mobile home. Other mobile homes and houses in Mount Airy were damaged by the strong winds. Damage was estimated around $300,000. Thunderstorm winds downed trees in Sparta and Jefferson and in the northern portion of Caswell County and tore a section of the roof off a mobile home 4.5 miles west of Mount Airy.
