The Connecticut River at Montague crested at 30.2 feet at 9 AM on May 13th; flood stage is 28 feet. The Connecticut River at Northampton crested at 114.5 feet at 4 AM on May 14th; flood stage is 112 feet. The greatest dollar losses from this flooding was to farmers in the Connecticut River Valley, where planting of the season's corn and squash crops was running at least two weeks behind schedule. Some farmers had to use boats to reach their fields. The dairy industry also was feeling the effects of the flooding with delays in cutting hay and spreading manure.
