A severe thunderstorm caused large hail and gusty winds. Dime to nickel size hail fell in Westfield and West Springfield, according to numerous spotter reports. Wind damage was reported in Springfield and Chicopee, where trees were reported blown down. A peak wind gust to 45 mph was recorded in downtown Springfield. According to one report, fifty trees were blown down. There were reports of trees falling on parked autos. Several houses were struck by falling trees. Electric power was disrupted for up to 5,800 customers at the height of the storm.
