A strong mesoscale convective system developed during the night. The air mass was very unstable over western Iowa with lifted indices around -9 degrees C. Total totals were around 61, with the K index of 48. Thunderstorms formed explosively and the complex was a back building complex. The storms produced hail and high winds over the western part of Iowa. Golf ball size hail was reported in many areas of Sac County, with crop damage quite widespread. Winds gusted to around 70 MPH in Crawford County.
