Damaging Wind in Illinois, September 8, 1996
A severe thunderstorm moved into western portions of Douglas County around 335 PM CDT. Winds from the storm blew the roof off of a barn 1 mile north of Garrett, then lightning struck a house 1 mile south of Garrett.

A severe thunderstorm moved into western portions of Douglas County around 335 PM CDT. Winds from the storm blew the roof off of a barn 1 mile north of Garrett, then lightning struck a house 1 mile south of Garrett. No one was injured though damage from the subsequent fire was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000. As the storm approached Tuscola, it knocked down numerous large tree limbs, several power lines, and snapped a 4" by 4" sign post in half. The storm continued moving to the east and blew down numerous trees along Hwy 130 between Camargo and Villa Grove. In Villa Grove, one tree fell onto a car. Fortunately no one was in it at the time. No injuries were reported and the total damage estimate from the storm was around $25,000.
