The Big Muddy River was above flood stage at Murphysboro from late April through June 23. Its highest stage in June was 27.3 feet on the 11th, which compares to a flood stage of 16 feet. Most of the damage caused by flooding of the Big Muddy River occurred in May, when the river reached nearly 40 feet. The main effect of this round of flooding was delayed planting of cropland in the floodplain.
