Remains of an old western Pacific typhoon moved by Umnak Island as an intense 972mb center early Thursday. Wind reports were scarce at land stations due to military base closures and reductions...however strong southeast winds were reported in advance of the front...which was about 240 miles east and northeast of the low. Brisk southwesterly winds were reported by ships in the area along the "back" side of the low. Wind gusts reached 67 mph at Cold Bay just before the front went through Thursday morning. Winds over 45 mph were reported by ships in the eastern and central Aleutians on the "back" side of the low.
