Strong gradient winds developed across southwest Virginia during the late morning and early afternoon hours ahead of a strong cold front on the 11th. High winds were initially confined to the higher terrain in the mountains, but then spread down to the lower elevations in the mountains as well as east of the mountains. Wind speeds during the late afternoon and early evening hours were mainly from 30 to 45 mph with some gusts in excess of 60 mph. Thunderstorms developed along the front during the early evening hours in south-central Virginia and resulted in additional strong winds. High winds not associated with thunderstorms knocked down trees, power lines and power poles across the area. In Montgomery County, the wind gusted to 59 mph in Blacksburg around 1855 EST. In Smyth County, high winds tore a section of a roof off a factory in Chilhowie and blew the roof off a house and garage in Atkins. The high winds also knocked downed numerous road signs in Franklin County and billboards in Roanoke County. In Alleghany County, a large tree fell on and damaged a house in Covington. In Carroll County, a tree fell on and damaged a school bus in Cana. Scattered power outages occurred across the area. Thunderstorm winds downed numerous trees across much of Pittsylvania, Charlotte and Halifax Counties and tore a 30-foot section of a roof off a business in Danville. In Pittsylvania County, thunderstorm winds overturned a travel trailer and damaged a car in Ringgold. Thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines in the eastern portion of Henry County.
