Thunderstorms in south-central Virginia during the afternoon and early evening hours on the 26th produced hail up to baseball-size and damaging winds. Thunderstorm winds produced extensive damage in a two mile wide path from six miles northwest of Phoenix to six miles southwest of Phoenix. Thunderstorm winds knocked trees into a house and an outbuilding, downed numerous large trees and damaged roofs in this area. The combination of strong winds and hail up to baseball-size damaged many vehicles and the tobacco crop and broke out some windows on the northwest sides of houses from two miles north to two miles south of route 40. Thunderstorm winds damaged crops, ripped the roofs off of barns and pushed a mobile home off its foundation eight miles northwest of Phoenix and knocked a large tree onto a house near Phoenix. Thunderstorm winds knocked a large tree into a power line near Axton, downed telephone lines and a telephone pole 10 miles north-northwest of Danville, knocked down large trees five miles south-southwest of Charlotte Court House and downed trees on route 40, five miles northeast of Brookneal and near Saxe. Dime-size hail covered the ground in Appomattox. Dime-size hail accumulated to a depth of one inch just north of Appomattox. Lightning knocked out a residential transformer in Appomattox.
