Thunderstorms during the evening hours on the 8th in southwest and south-central Virginia produced damaging lightning and wind. Thunderstorm winds blew the roof off a church in Danville. The pipe organ, piano, choir loft, and the pulpit in the church were destroyed and a wall of the church was damaged. Damage was estimated at nearly $1 million. In addition, thunderstorm winds knocked the steeple off another church, damaged a downtown business, tore siding off of houses, and downed numerous trees and power poles in Danville. Thunderstorm winds tore a large section of the tin roof off a hotel in Pearisburg. Damage was estimated at $18,000. Thunderstorm winds downed trees and large branches in and near Fincastle, downed trees three miles southwest of Pulaski, in northwest Pulaski, six miles east of Bedford, in Halifax and 10 miles north-northeast of Blacksburg, damaged roofs and downed trees in Nars, downed trees across roads seven miles southeast of Danville and downed a tree in Pounding Mill. Thunderstorm winds knocked trees down on power lines in Radford. A lightning strike damaged an antenna and several computers in Fincastle.
