The second severe thunderstorm of the afternoon ripped through The Plains, where the Virginia Winefest was being held. Thunderstorm winds, estimated at over 60 mph, blew down dozens of tents and temporary buildings. Flying debris from the structures caused 15 injuries to festival-goers; most injuries were minor head trauma and lacerations. Twelve persons were treated at the scene; three others were sent to a local hospital. In nearby Marshall, trees and power lines were knocked down, causing an isolated flash fire.

Thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours on the 3rd produced damaging lightning and wind and hail up to nickel-size. Thunderstorm winds downed numerous trees in Lexington. Some trees blocked roads for more than one hour. Thunderstorm winds knocked a tree on top of a car two miles southeast of Rockbridge Baths, injuring the driver. Lightning started a fire in an upstairs bedroom of a house in Buena Vista which resulted in an estimated $8,000 in damage.
