Thunderstorm Wind, Augusta

Thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines, flattened hay fields and other crops. In Staunton, lightning blew a hole in the roof of an apartment building. It hit a turret, went through the shingles and charred the attic. The electrical surge damaged appliances in the building. Lightning struck the Farm Credit Building on local Route 792 (east of Staunton) causing minor damage. It knocked off boards and punctured the air conditioner. Trees were blocking routes 693 and 252. Winds caused an aluminum roof and 45 by 60-foot wall of a storage shed to collapse. The storm also caused extensive damage to five sections of an empty greenhouse and damaged a resident's satellite dish. Hail, of unknown size, also occurred with the storm.
