Thunderstorms in northwest North Carolina during the evening hours on the 17th produced damaging lightning and winds. Thunderstorm winds destroyed a hay barn and downed trees in Fairplains. One of the trees damaged a house when it landed on it. A vehicle was severely damaged and two other vehicles were slightly damaged when debris from the hay barn hit them. In addition, fencing in Fairplains was also damaged by thunderstorm winds. Thunderstorm winds measured up to 84 mph damaged a boat house, downed numerous trees and downed a power pole in Roaring Gap. Some of the trees blocked roads and one tree fell on a house. Thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines and tore the roof off a chicken house and a barn in North Wilkesboro. Lightning started a fire which damaged a home two miles northwest of Cherry Lane.
