Tornadoes and Damaging Winds in New Jersey, July 16, 1995

A complex of severe thunderstorms caused widespread tree and power line damage in the county. A wind gust to 98 mph was measured in Pittsgrove. Wind damage started in the county in Elsinboro Township as measured 70 mph gusts snapped trees and damaged the roof of a golf course's club house. In Pennsville Township boats were pulled from their dock. The roof of the Anchor Glass Company was torn off. In Pilesgrove Township a clothing store sign was blown away, another store's roof was torn off and there was a trail of uprooted trees along U.S. Route 40. Houses damaged by fallen trees occurred in Pilesgrove, Quinton and Upper Pittsgrove Townships.

A severe thunderstorm downed a few trees in Phillipsburg.

A complex of severe thunderstorms caused considerable tree and wire damage mainly in Clayton, Elk, Monroe and Washington Townships. A SKYWARN observer in Williamstown recorded a wind gust to 58 mph.

An F1 tornado touched down in the Broad Street area near the Bridgeton Middle School in the western Bridgeton. Four foot wide trees were uprooted and twisted in its damage path. Several homes were damaged by fallen trees. Two electrical poles and one chimney showed signs of twisting. Blowing debris punched a hole in the roof of a Broad Street Seven-Eleven. No injuries were reported. The tornado lifted before reaching deeper into downtown Bridgeton. The same complex of severe thunderstorms that spawned this tornado also caused sporadic reports of downed trees and power lines throughout the county. Fallen trees damaged two cars in Vineland. About 35,000 Atlantic Electric Company customers in Cumberland and Cape May Counties lost power. About 1,000 customers were still powerless Monday (17th) morning. It took until Tuesday (18th) to restore power to the last 200 to 300 customers.

The thunderstorms produced isolated reports of uprooted trees throughout the county. Two roofs were torn off. One damaged a car. The worst damage occurred in Stone Harbor. An F1 tornado/waterspout touched down in Paradise Bay and cut across Paradise Drive in a northwest to southeast direction before lifting. Damage occurred to the bay side facing parts of four houses. An upstairs addition of one house was badly damaged. Windows were blown in on the north facing and blown out on the west facing side. In one instance a step ladder was blown through a window and came to rest against a neighbor's house. Patio furniture was blown around. One family never found theirs. No injuries were reported.
