A tornado first touched down on the north side of the Albany Dougherty County Airport then moved east north-east for five miles to just past U.S. Highway 19. In two spots along the path the tornado lifted briefly. One of these breaks in the damage path occurred at an elementary school that was in session. The worst damage was to a Winn Dixie grocery store where many of the 36 injuries occurred. One side of the store was pulled out and collapsed to the side parking area. In the parking lot, numerous cars were moved about and a few turned over. Over 40 homes were destroyed with over 50 more severely damaged. Five businesses were severely damaged.

Thunderstorm winds knocked down five to 10 trees in Cordele and another was knocked down 10 miles southeast of Cordele. A funnel cloud was reported in the vicinity of the Crisp County High School. Over 20 homes lost power due to trees down on main power lines on Fleming Road and in the vicinity of 20th Avenue and Seventh Street.

Tornado started in Bryan County as indicated by 88D. Tornadic storm appeared to have diminished while still in Bryan County and then regenerated rapidly, just before entering Effingham County and then crossing Interstate 16. Tornado moved east northeast and ended about 1.5 miles east of Eden. No significant damage occurred in Bryan County. In Effingham County, two mobile homes were destroyed and roof damage to several homes and numerous trees down.
