Damaging Winds in Pennsylvania, November 1, 1994

Trees were downed by thunderstorm winds.

Power lines were knocked down by the wind in Penn Township.

A squall line of severe thunderstorms downed trees and wires throughout the county. Scaffolding was blown over outside a Giant Food Store under construction in the Cleona Square Mall off of U.S. Route 422.

An uprooted tree in North Codorus Township punctured three holes in a house. Elsewhere in the county a downed limb damaged a porch in Shiloh and downed wires resulted in 300 customers losing power in York Haven.

Severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 60 mph at Lancaster Airport. Several trees were uprooted within Lancaster. A couple was trapped, but not injured, within a car by a fallen tree. In Ephrata the wind ripped two sheets of metal measuring six feet by two feet from a lean-to at a lumber company. About 1700 customers lost power.

A seventeen year male was killed and his girlfriend was injured when a three foot wide oak tree landed and crushed their vehicle on Cooks Landing Road in Fulton Township. (M17V)

Trees and wires were uprooted in West Nottingham.

Thunderstorm winds knocked over trees and power lines in Porter Township, Pottsville and Wayne Townships.

Severe thunderstorms cut a swath of damage throughout central Berks County from Perry Township south through Reading to Cumru Township. Numerous trees and power lines were downed and resulted in power outages to 4,500 customers. In Centre Township the roof was blown off a vacant house. In Cumru Township a woman was injured on Hickory Road when a tree fell on her car.

A squall line of severe thunderstorms produced wind related damage throughout a large part of Chester County. In Unionville, a wind gust to 58 mph was recorded. In North Coventry eight 70 foot tall trees were uprooted in a single property. In Lionville a tree crashed into a house under construction. In Phoenixville, several empty pools were blown around resulting in several thousand dollars in damage. In Upper Uwchlan Township a synagogue under construction was damaged.

A line of severe thunderstorms produced damage throughout the northwest half of Montgomery County. The worst damage (about 75K) was done on the campus of Ursinus College in Collegeville. A large stained glass window was shattered. Shingles were ripped off the roof of Bomberger Hall. About 30 trees were uprooted and damaged several dormitories. Around 100 students were temporarily homeless. Elsewhere in Collegeville a half dozen homes were damaged by the wind and flying containers damaged four cars. In Zieglersville two barns lost their roofs. A child was injured when she was blown off the steps of her house. In Limerick, a 3,600 square foot aluminum storage barn was destroyed and a four horse trailer was toppled. In Trappe two tractor trailers traveling in opposite directions were toppled on Pennsylvania State Route 422. About 7,000 of the 22,000 Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) outages this afternoon occurred within Montgomery County.

Trees were uprooted in Palmerton and East Penn Townships. Pea size hail accumulated on lawns and sidewalks. Leaves, which clogged catch basins, contributed to poor drainage flooding during the thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm winds ripped the tin roof off a three story apartment building and caused the brick walls to collapse on the third floor. Most of the remaining debris fell in an alley between apartment buildings. No injuries were reported.

Power lines and trees were knocked down throughout the county. Around 6,500 Pennsylvania Power and Light and 4,500 Metropolitan Edison customers lost power throughout the Allentown Metropolitan Areas.

Dozens of trees were uprooted throughout southeastern Monroe County. In Syndersville, two trees landed and totaled a trailer home. In Saylorsburg, a piece of a barn roof was peeled off and hurled 150 feet. Elsewhere in town damaging winds tore a trailer roof and a porch from a house. Five trees fell on one house in Analomink. A roof was blown off in Ross Township. Throughout the county about 2,250 Pennsylvania Power and Light customers lost power.

Severe thunderstorms caused damage in Bethlehem and Forks Townships. In Bethlehem, there were numerous trees and power lines down. The hardest hit areas were located east of the Northampton Community College and the Penn Highway and Sheridan Drive intersection. The wind lifted a wrought iron table and flung it into a neighboring house and punctured five holes in the siding. In Forks Township, the hardest hit area was in the Green Trail area. Trees were snapped. A trailer was pushed across a driveway into a tree and a plastic moisture barrier was ripped off a house.
