Tornadoes and Damaging Winds in Pennsylvania, August 14, 1994

Trees were downed, some on power lines.

Severe thunderstorms caused wind related damage in several townships in the southwest section of the county. Trees were knocked down in Glen Rock, Stoverstown and West Manheim Townships. The downed trees resulted in 1,200 Metropolitan Edison Company customers losing power. In Hanover, a trailer was moved one foot off its stand by the wind.

Severe thunderstorms produced straight line wind damage across several townships in northern and central Chester County. Several large trees were snapped off or uprooted with downed limbs and wires reported in West Sadsbury Township. Similar wind related damage occurred farther east in East Brandywine, Uwchlan and West Pikeland. The last damage of the afternoon occurred in Westtown. A 200-year-old poplar tree was uprooted and broke windows and the front porch of a house.

Trees and tree limbs were reported downed in Richlandtown in northern Bucks County and in Buckingham and Upper Makefield Townships in central Bucks County.

,,,,,,,,Lightning A F1 (Fujita Scale) tornado touched down in the Brandywine Village/Lafayette Park area of Upper Merion Township on Allendale Road just to the north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 276). The tornado sighting was phoned into the National Weather Service by a SKYWARN Spotter. The tornado stayed on the ground for about one mile before lifting around Crossfield Road. Most of the wind damage was downed or snapped (40 to 50) trees. The bulk of the uprooted trees were either in poor health or very old. Two houses were damaged by trees falling on them. The worse one sustained about $6,000 in damage to its roof, porch, upstairs bathroom and gutters. The tornado touched down within one mile of the King of Prussia Mall. No injuries were reported. This was the 12th confirmed tornado in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area this year. Elsewhere in Montgomery County damaging winds knocked over a centerfield fence and uprooted between 12 and 18 trees in Upper Gwynedd Township. A lightning strike ignited a fire in an Upper Gwynedd house. It apparently entered through the electrical box and started a fire in the basement. Damage was estimated between $25,000 and $30,000. Thunderstorm winds uprooted a large pear tree in Audubon. Frequent lightning resulted in power outages to 55,000 Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) customers throughout their service area.

Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted throughout northwestern Delaware County. The hardest hit areas were Radnor Township with 25 trees damaged and the Easttown area with 18 trees damaged. One of the trees in Easttown landed on an occupied car, but none of its occupants were injured.

Trees were knocked down along U.S. Route 11 in Hunlock Creek.

Damaging wind gusts uprooted trees in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. A lightning strike to WPGR-AM's Roxborough transmitter caused $20,000 in electrical equipment damage. It also knocked down the station's peak transmitted power from 50,000 watts to 1,000 watts.

A tornado briefly touched down along Pennsylvania State Route 106 in Clifford. There were several eyewitness reports including a SKYWARN Spotter who saw it. A shanty was lifted into a tree. Shingles were torn off one house and a large hay bale was moved over 100 feet. No injuries were reported.
