Slow moving Tropical Storm Ana produced tropical storm force winds with torrential rain for two days along the coast. A 43 kt gust was recorded at North Myrtle Beach with numerous reports over 35 kts along the coast. Rainfall amounts were between five and six inches. Some sporadic reports of street flooding were noted. The tidal surge was recorded at 2.3 feet at the Springmaid Pier with moderate beach erosion observed.

A 52 kt gust was recorded at the Ocean Crest Pier with numerous reports of 40 kts along the coast. Rainfall amounts over six inches were recorded at Oak Island and Southport. The storm surge produced one to three feet of overwash along East 5th Street and Shallotte Blvd.

A waterspout developed over the Croatan Sound and lifted northeast moving onshore over parts of Roanoke Island as a weak EF0 tornado producing minor damage. Winds were estimated at 80 mph with a few small trees blown down. One house on Vista Lake Drive had a portion of the roof partially removed. There were no injuries or fatalities. This water spout/weak tornado developed along a band of showers occurring on the backside of the remnants of Tropical Storm Ana.

What this means

A best track is the record a warning agency settles on after the storm, not what it said at the time: position, maximum sustained wind and central pressure every six hours, revised against every observation that came in later. Category is the Saffir-Simpson scale, which runs from Category 1 at 64 kt to Category 5 at 137 kt and reads wind only, so it says nothing about surge or rain. Accumulated cyclone energy adds up the square of the wind through the storm's life, so it counts strength and duration together.
