The National Blend of Models

NOAA NBM v5.0 · run of Sep 29, 6:00 AM MDT

NOAA’s weighted blend of every model it runs, to eleven days, with the chances the grid above does not carry. Where the local office’s grid reaches, its figure sits beneath the blend’s; where it does not, the blend stands alone.

NOAA GHCN normals and records at Cheyenne Mountain (CWN) · Climate Prediction Center outlooks

No forecast has skill day by day past about two weeks, and this page does not print one. Where the models stop, the calendar takes over: the 1991 to 2020 normal for each date, the record high and low ever set on it, and where the Climate Prediction Center leans warm, cool, wet or dry over the coming weeks, the month and the season. A site that shows a high for a date three months out is showing you this normal with a wobble.

The forecast reaches Wed Oct 14, from the NWS grid, then the National Blend, then the mean of the global models. Beyond it the lines are the calendar.

Health and activities

Rules of thumb over the next 24 hours of forecast, the warnings in force, the station’s report, air quality and pollen

None of these is a measurement. Each is a rating of the forecast ahead, and of what is happening at the point right now, against what the activity or the ailment is known to mind, and each names the figure that decided it. An ailment or a pest is rated as a risk, low to extreme; an activity, a chore or a journey as a condition, poor to ideal.

Each rating says which span it is for: the rest of today’s daylight, tonight, or the next 24 hours.

Dark is the sun 18 degrees below the horizon; where it never gets that low, 12 degrees, marked nautical. Clear is sky cover of 20% or less. A bright moon is one above the horizon with a quarter or more of its disc lit. Transparency in the table is estimated from surface humidity (70% and 85% mark fair and poor) and visibility, since the forecast carries no haze or high cloud moisture. Seeing and transparency by hour, where shown, are Environment and Climate Change Canada’s astronomy forecast (regional model; seeing from cloud, wind shear, turbulence near the ground and the surface temperature trend; transparency from the moisture through the whole air column), under the Open Government Licence - Canada. Dew is the air within 2 °C of its dew point. Excellent is four or more clear moonless hours with good transparency; good is three; fair is one, or two clear hours.

Golden hour is the sun between 6 degrees above the horizon and 4 degrees below it; blue hour is the sun between 4 and 6 degrees below. These are the definitions timeanddate.com and PhotoPills use. Directions are degrees clockwise from true north, where the sun’s upper edge and the moon’s center cross a flat horizon; hills and buildings change both. None means the sun does not reach that height on the day; all day means it stays inside the band.

Flight restrictions nearby

Flight restrictions on the map. TFRs are not the whole picture: controlled airspace around airports needs LAANC authorization. Check the FAA’s B4UFLY.

Wind at 400 ft is estimated from the 10 m forecast by the power law, with exponents for each Pasquill stability class (Irwin 1979, rural, as in EPA dispersion models; the class from wind, sun height and cloud, after Turner 1970); gusts keep the ground gust’s margin. Caution from three quarters of your limit; the default 24 mph is the wind resistance printed for common sub-250 g drones. 14 CFR 107.51: “The minimum flight visibility, as observed from the location of the control station must be no less than 3 statute miles” and at least “500 feet below the cloud”. 14 CFR 107.29: “No person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system during periods of civil twilight unless the small unmanned aircraft has lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles”; civil twilight is the 30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset, in Alaska the Air Almanac’s. Kp: SWPC’s scales say satellite navigation problems may occur at G3 (Kp 7) and navigation is “degraded for hours” at G4 (Kp 8); Kp 5 is the typical app warning. Typical limits, not rules: rain chance 30% caution and 60% no-fly, thunder 10% and 20%, below 0 °C caution and −10 °C no-fly, over 40 °C caution. Your drone’s manual and the airspace come first.

Spraying: sustained wind 3 to 10 mph, the range US extension services and most labels give; gusts no more than 15 mph (this page’s limit); delta T (air minus wet-bulb temperature) 2 to 8 °C preferred and 8 to 10 °C marginal, from GRDC guidance, with the wet bulb by Stull’s formula; no hour at a 30% chance of rain or 0.25 mm forecast during the rain-free time. Follow the product label, which overrides all of this. Field days: dry is no daytime hour at a 30% chance and under 1 mm all day, wet is 6 mm (0.25 in) or more; soil moisture is not in the forecast, so ground still wet from earlier rain is not accounted for. Hay drying marks a dry day with humidity down to 50% and a breeze of 5 mph or more.

Periods in bold fall within an hour of sunrise or sunset. The weather’s side is the fishing index

Major periods are two hours centered on the moon’s passage overhead and underfoot; minor periods are one hour centered on moonrise and moonset: the conventional durations of John Alden Knight’s solunar tables (1936). The rating is this site’s: one point to start, two more within a day and a half of a new or full moon (one more within three and a half days), and one more when a period falls within an hour of sunrise or sunset. The theory has mixed support in fisheries research; the times are exact astronomy.

The forecaster’s discussion

NWS Pueblo, CO · issued Sep 29, 11:49 AM MDT

Written by the forecaster on duty for their own colleagues and for anyone who wants to know why the forecast says what it says. It is not edited for the public, so it uses the office’s shorthand; it is also the most honest thing any weather service publishes.

KEY Messages

Wet, active weather today through Thursday with widespread heavy rainfall and Flash Flood Watches in effect for much of the area.

There is a fair amount of uncertainty with precipitation amounts...while the forecast favors higher amounts, a few model solutions have significantly less rainfall

Cooler through Thursday with mainly 50s and 60s for highs.

Drier and warmer conditions for the weekend into early next week.

Update

910 AM MDT Tue Sep 29 2026

Update to current forecast for today, with scattered to numerous showers spreading northeast across the southern tier through the southeast plains through the morning. Moist southerly flow aloft to help develop scattered showers, and a few embedded thunderstorms over and near the higher terrain through the afternoon, with widespread precipitation developing from south to north through the evening and into early Wednesday morning, as the upper low lifts north and east across northern New Mexico. While can rule out locally heavy rain, through out the day, the heaviest rain area-wide is expected later tonight and through the day Wednesday. However, we will keep the current Flood Watch in place, hopefully to avoid confusion in changing the timing.

Short Term · Through Tonight

1238 AM MDT Tue Sep 29 2026

Currently...satellite and radar imagery early this morning show widespread shower activity spreading across much of southern Colorado. These showers will continue lift northeast across the region through sunrise. Temperatures are currently in the 50s to 60s across the Plains, and will likely hold steady through morning.

Today and tonight...an upper level low will slowly move out of southern California and across Arizona through tonight. Abundant moisture will continue to stream northeastward ahead of the upper low across Colorado leading to continued periods of widespread moderate to at times heavy rainfall. The main focus for today will be south along the New Mexico border, lifting northeast along the Kansas border by this afternoon and evening. At the surface, a weak frontal boundary will drop south along the I-25 corridor turning winds northerly by mid to late morning. This will likely limit rainfall across the Pikes Peak Region down in the Pueblo. Low level surface flow will shift more northeasterly late tonight into Wednesday morning. This will help showers fill in across the Plains toward Wednesday morning. Temperatures this afternoon will reach into the 60s across the region, with a few low 70s near southeast Kansas border.

Long Term · Wednesday Through Monday

1238 AM MDT Tue Sep 29 2026

There is still a LOT of uncertainty among the various model solutions through Thursday with the handling of the remnants of Polo and the track of the upper low. The ECMWF continues to track the upper low further west, while the GFS is further southeast. There is better agreement beyond Thursday with high pressure impacting the region over the weekend into early next week.

Wednesday through Thursday...as mentioned, there remains a high degree of uncertainty with the upper low storm track, gradient, and QPF amounts. There are two scenarios that remain plausible during this period...the ECMWF, some CAM guidance, and several ensembles tracking the upper low along with the remnants of Polo north out of New Mexico, and across southern Colorado before shifting the system east Thursday evening. These solutions are by far the wettest solutions, most with widespread 2 to 4 inch amounts focused along the central/southern I-25 corridor and Raton Mesa region. Strong upper dynamics, deep upslope flow, and moisture wrapping around the system look to produce a period of heavy rainfall Wednesday into Thursday morning over the areas mentioned above. This activity looks to shift eastward Thursday afternoon and clear into Kansas overnight Thursday. Wind in these solutions would be possible Wednesday night Thursday morning, but not as strong as the further east guidance.

Looking at the other scenario, the GFS, NAM 12km and other various AI and ensemble guidance are clustered around a drier solution. They track the upper low out of New Mexico and into the Central Plains. A majority of the guidance in this camp have much stronger north downslope winds Wednesday night into Thursday morning, limiting precipitation amounts along the I-25 corridor (very similar to our winter storms). These guidance have the highest totals out east along the Kansas border. QPF amounts with these solutions vary from a half inch or less, to around an inch and a half over the Raton Mesa and near the Kansas border. In addition, a strong gradient would set up, with very strong winds possible off the Palmer Divide and across the Plains north of Highway 50. Wind gusts in excess of 40 to 50 mph would be possible.

As for the the forecast...did not stray from the NBM guidance, which is similar to the ECMWF camp, with widespread 1 to 3 inches of rainfall during this period, mainly along and south of Highway 50, with the highest amounts along the Wet Mountains and southern Sangre de Cristo Range. Just know that if the storm track is further east (like the GFS), rainfall amounts could be significantly less!

Temperatures do look to remain cool, with 50s and 60s both Wednesday and Thursday across the region, and 40s to 50s for overnight lows. A Flash Flood Watch remain in effect for this period for most of the county warning area, including the Aspen Acres burn scar.

Snow levels look to remain high; above 12 kft through this period. Several inches of snow are possible across the higher peaks.

Friday through Tuesday...upper level high pressure looks to build across the Great Basin over the weekend into early next week, with generally broad northwesterly flow aloft. Temperatures look to warm, and much drier air will work into the region. Expect any residual showers on the Plains to have cleared by Friday morning, with dry conditions through early next week anticipated. Temperatures will warm back through the 70s and lower 80s. A couple of dry cold fronts Saturday and Monday will bring minor cool downs to the Plains.

Aviation · 18Z TAFs Through 18Z Wednesday

1148 AM MDT Tue Sep 29 2026

A fairly active period with periods of rain with low vis along with low ceilings, low end MVFR, is expected across all of the TAF sites.

Latest radar imagery is showing much of the rain that has been in place over the last 24 hours shifting to the east of the area. This will provide a precipitation lull at all sites for much of the day today. Did keep prob30 groups in at all sites for this afternoon as I do think there is still a low chance for isolated development this afternoon. The risk of thunder does look low, but will continue to keep a close eye this afternoon.

By this evening, will see expansion of precipitation shield as it moves into southern Colorado, reaching ALS first and then continuing north into PUB and COS. The rain will initially be light but will likely see intensity increase during the overnight hours. Have trended vis in this way as well, and expect vis to stay in the 3-5sm range for much of the night. Similar trend with ceilings expected at all sites, with ALS observing ceilings falling to MVFR first and then PUB and COS to follow. Feel fairly confident with the general timing at all sites, however, could see some additional adjustments needed as we draw near. Also feel confident with how low ceilings get, thinking 1kft is the lowest. While cooling and rain is maximized early Wednesday morning, winds look to ramp up and this should help to offset the lowering.

Generally lighter winds across ALS this period, while winds will be stronger at both PUB and COS. Period of strongest winds and gusts at these sites will be late in the period, Wednesday morning, when northerly winds really ramp up. Did increase during that time, but could see the need to increase further.

Each forecast day beside the same date at the nearest long-record station: the thirty-year normal and the record high and low with their years, so a forecast high that would break a record says so.
The next 90 days
The forecast as far as the grid, the National Blend and the global models reach, and the calendar after that: the normal and the record for every date, with the Climate Prediction Center’s lean for the weeks, the month and the season drawn over them. No made-up highs for a date three months out.

Common questions

Where does this forecast come from?

From the National Weather Service forecast grid published at api.weather.gov, the same grid the local forecast office edits through the day and the source of every forecast on weather.gov. The written periods, the hourly digest and the forecaster’s discussion are the NWS’s own products, shown as issued. Nothing here is a blend a website made.

How far ahead does it go?

The grid runs seven days ahead, hour by hour for the first days and in three to six hour steps after that. The National Blend of Models carries the days to eleven and the global models to sixteen. Beyond that the page carries the national centers’ outlooks, severe weather to day eight, rainfall to day seven, and the Climate Prediction Center’s odds for the coming weeks, month and season, over a ninety-day calendar of the normal and the record for each date. No forecast has skill day by day past about two weeks, and this page does not print one.

Why is this different from the app on my phone?

Most forecast apps show a blend of models chosen by the company that makes the app. This page shows the forecast the local National Weather Service office issues, edited by the forecasters who will also issue the warnings, and it shows all of it rather than the six numbers that fit on a phone. The discussion explains the reasoning, which no app carries.

What is a place’s address here?

Every town has its own page, such as /forecast/us/oklahoma/oklahoma-city/, and every day at a town has one too. A ZIP code typed into the search goes to the town it belongs to. Any coordinate at all can be looked up, and the page names the nearest town.
