The National Blend of Models

NOAA NBM v5.0 · run of Oct 1, 7:00 PM CDT

NOAA’s weighted blend of every model it runs, to eleven days, with the chances the grid above does not carry. Where the local office’s grid reaches, its figure sits beneath the blend’s; where it does not, the blend stands alone.

NOAA GHCN normals and records at Guntersville (8A1) · Climate Prediction Center outlooks

No forecast has skill day by day past about two weeks, and this page does not print one. Where the models stop, the calendar takes over: the 1991 to 2020 normal for each date, the record high and low ever set on it, and where the Climate Prediction Center leans warm, cool, wet or dry over the coming weeks, the month and the season. A site that shows a high for a date three months out is showing you this normal with a wobble.

The forecast reaches Sat Oct 17, from the NWS grid, then the National Blend, then the mean of the global models. Beyond it the lines are the calendar.

Health and activities

Rules of thumb over the next 24 hours of forecast, the warnings in force, the station’s report, air quality and pollen

None of these is a measurement. Each is a rating of the forecast ahead, and of what is happening at the point right now, against what the activity or the ailment is known to mind, and each names the figure that decided it. An ailment or a pest is rated as a risk, low to extreme; an activity, a chore or a journey as a condition, poor to ideal.

Each rating says which span it is for: the rest of today’s daylight, tonight, or the next 24 hours.

Dark is the sun 18 degrees below the horizon; where it never gets that low, 12 degrees, marked nautical. Clear is sky cover of 20% or less. A bright moon is one above the horizon with a quarter or more of its disc lit. Transparency in the table is estimated from surface humidity (70% and 85% mark fair and poor) and visibility, since the forecast carries no haze or high cloud moisture. Seeing and transparency by hour, where shown, are Environment and Climate Change Canada’s astronomy forecast (regional model; seeing from cloud, wind shear, turbulence near the ground and the surface temperature trend; transparency from the moisture through the whole air column), under the Open Government Licence - Canada. Dew is the air within 2 °C of its dew point. Excellent is four or more clear moonless hours with good transparency; good is three; fair is one, or two clear hours.

Golden hour is the sun between 6 degrees above the horizon and 4 degrees below it; blue hour is the sun between 4 and 6 degrees below. These are the definitions timeanddate.com and PhotoPills use. Directions are degrees clockwise from true north, where the sun’s upper edge and the moon’s center cross a flat horizon; hills and buildings change both. None means the sun does not reach that height on the day; all day means it stays inside the band.

Wind at 400 ft is estimated from the 10 m forecast by the power law, with exponents for each Pasquill stability class (Irwin 1979, rural, as in EPA dispersion models; the class from wind, sun height and cloud, after Turner 1970); gusts keep the ground gust’s margin. Caution from three quarters of your limit; the default 24 mph is the wind resistance printed for common sub-250 g drones. 14 CFR 107.51: “The minimum flight visibility, as observed from the location of the control station must be no less than 3 statute miles” and at least “500 feet below the cloud”. 14 CFR 107.29: “No person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system during periods of civil twilight unless the small unmanned aircraft has lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles”; civil twilight is the 30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset, in Alaska the Air Almanac’s. Kp: SWPC’s scales say satellite navigation problems may occur at G3 (Kp 7) and navigation is “degraded for hours” at G4 (Kp 8); Kp 5 is the typical app warning. Typical limits, not rules: rain chance 30% caution and 60% no-fly, thunder 10% and 20%, below 0 °C caution and −10 °C no-fly, over 40 °C caution. Your drone’s manual and the airspace come first.

Spraying: sustained wind 3 to 10 mph, the range US extension services and most labels give; gusts no more than 15 mph (this page’s limit); delta T (air minus wet-bulb temperature) 2 to 8 °C preferred and 8 to 10 °C marginal, from GRDC guidance, with the wet bulb by Stull’s formula; no hour at a 30% chance of rain or 0.25 mm forecast during the rain-free time. Follow the product label, which overrides all of this. Field days: dry is no daytime hour at a 30% chance and under 1 mm all day, wet is 6 mm (0.25 in) or more; soil moisture is not in the forecast, so ground still wet from earlier rain is not accounted for. Hay drying marks a dry day with humidity down to 50% and a breeze of 5 mph or more.

Periods in bold fall within an hour of sunrise or sunset. The weather’s side is the fishing index

Major periods are two hours centered on the moon’s passage overhead and underfoot; minor periods are one hour centered on moonrise and moonset: the conventional durations of John Alden Knight’s solunar tables (1936). The rating is this site’s: one point to start, two more within a day and a half of a new or full moon (one more within three and a half days), and one more when a period falls within an hour of sunrise or sunset. The theory has mixed support in fisheries research; the times are exact astronomy.

KEY Messages

Updated at 1127 PM CDT Thu Oct 1 2026

Chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase from 20-40% on Friday/Friday night to 40-60% by Saturday afternoon. Lightning and brief heavy rainfall will be the main impacts from the storms.

A fairly widespread coverage of rain (and some embedded thunderstorms) is expected from early Sunday morning through much of the day. The risk for flash and areal flooding will be greatest during this period.

A cold front will usher a drier airmass into the region early Monday morning, which will remain in place for the rest of the week.

Near Term

1127 PM CDT Thu Oct 1 2026

(This Evening through Friday)

In the mid/upper-levels, S-SW flow aloft of 15-25 knots will gradually back to W-SW over the course of the near term period as our region will remain situated between a high centered off the southeastern Atlantic Coast and an amplifying northern stream wave moving eastward across southern OT/QC. At the surface, light- moderate S-SE flow will continue overnight, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward off the coast of NC. Although this will not have a significant impact on boundary layer dewpoints, a modest low-level jet will contribute to an increase in low stratus clouds prior to sunrise, which (along with slightly elevated winds) should keep overnight lows in the 65-70F range. Well to the northwest of our region, a cold front extends from central QC southwestward through Lower MI, central IL/MO and to a decaying area of low pressure across northwest TX. As surface pressures gradually rise within an anticyclone across the northern Plains, the front will continue to drift southeastward overnight, but with most of the related precipitation expected to be anafrontal in nature, conditions across our CWFA will remain dry through 12Z.

The cold front will continue to advance slowly southeastward tomorrow as the center of a Canadian surface high migrates further eastward into the Upper MS Valley. Although it appears as if the leading edge of the cooler/drier continental airmass will eventually stall along an axis from northern AR east-northeastward into the central Appalachians, a prefrontal surface trough/wind shift axis well ahead of the thermal/moisture gradient may initiate development of a few showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon (particularly across northwest AL and southern Middle TN, where current POPs are in the 30-40% range). However, additional convection may also evolve in the higher terrain of northeast AL. Instability may initially be limited by morning stratus, but as clouds bases lift during the afternoon, temperatures warming into the u80s-l90s will support CAPE in the 500-1000 J/kg range within an environment of weak shear. Thus, lighting will be the primary concern with thunderstorm activity tomorrow.

Short Term

1127 PM CDT Thu Oct 1 2026

(Friday night through Sunday night)

Latest short range model guidance suggests that a subtropical ridge will gradually retrograde from the southwestern North Atlantic into the southern Gulf over the course of the short term period. This evolution will maintain weakly confluent flow aloft across our region (between the high to our southeast and a pair of northern stream troughs traveling along the U.S.-Canadian border). Although this type of pattern would normally not be conducive for either widespread or intense precipitation, a surface trough/wind-shift axis will drift further southeastward into the region on Friday night (before becoming stationary on Saturday), and this feature should provide sufficient lift within the increasingly moist airmass (highlighted by PWAT values in the 1.8-2" range, and potentially in excess of 2") to support development of showers and thunderstorms. The spatial coverage of convective cells will be notably higher during the afternoon on Saturday (compared to Friday night) and to the south/east of the streamline confluence axis. However, with a large amount of uncertainty regarding precisely where the boundary will lie, POPs range from 40%/NW to 60%/SE. Weak shear will continue to support unorganized convective updrafts during this period, but afternoon temps in the m-u 80s may support slightly higher CAPE as dewpoints rise into the u60s-l70s. Regardless, lighting and locally heavy rainfall will be the main storm impacts.

During the period from Saturday night-Sunday, the low-level convergence axis may attempt to lift northwestward in response to an amplifying northern stream trough that will travel east- southeastward into southern OT and the western Great Lakes by 12Z Sunday. As this occurs, frontogenetical forcing will gradually strengthen in the lower troposphere, and this coupled with weak lift along the southern flank of the trough to our north may result in an increase in both the coverage and intensity of rain and embedded thunderstorms beginning early Sunday morning and continuing for much of the day. Although weak shear and instability will continue to limit storm intensity, it is during this timeframe that the risk for flash and areal flooding will be greatest (especially as PWAT values may be in excess of 2"). Current thinking is that rain and thunderstorms will slowly end from NW-to-SE late Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening as a cold front shifts southward into the forecast area, with strengthening N-NE winds in the wake of the front advecting a drier airmass into the northern part of the region by early Monday morning. High temperatures on Sunday will be reduced to the 75-80F range due to widespread clouds and precipitation, with temps by Monday morning falling into the u50s-l60s.

Long Term

1127 PM CDT Thu Oct 1 2026

(Monday through Thursday)

Global models suggest that a reinforcing surface high will shift eastward from the Upper MS Valley into the Mid-Atlantic region on Monday and Tuesday, with moderate N-NE flow veering to the SE as pressures begin to rise to the east of the central/southern Appalachians. Although a temporary increase in clouds (and perhaps a few light showers) may occur at the onset of this regime on Tuesday, a drier airmass will likely return from the east for the last couple of days of the forecast period. Afternoon highs will remain in the u70s-m80s, with overnight lows in the m40s-l50s.

Aviation

1241 AM CDT Fri Oct 2 2026

(06Z TAFS)

There have been no significant changes to previous aviation forecast reasoning, as VFR conditions will continue through the early morning hours. However, a persistent 15-25 knot SSW low- level jet will contribute to gradual moistening in the low- levels, perhaps allowing for a period of broken MVFR stratus in the 10-14Z timeframe. Current thinking is that cloud bases will progressively rise back to low-VFR levels throughout the late morning hours, but broken stratus is expected to persist for much of the day. As a prefrontal wind-shift axis begins to drop southeastward into the region, a few SHRA/TSRA may occur (especially from the AL-TN border northward) during the aftn/evening, but anticipated coverage is too low to include in the forecast at this point.

Common questions

Where does this forecast come from?

From the National Weather Service forecast grid published at api.weather.gov, the same grid the local forecast office edits through the day and the source of every forecast on weather.gov. The written periods, the hourly digest and the forecaster’s discussion are the NWS’s own products, shown as issued. Nothing here is a blend a website made.

How far ahead does it go?

The grid runs seven days ahead, hour by hour for the first days and in three to six hour steps after that. The National Blend of Models carries the days to eleven and the global models to sixteen. Beyond that the page carries the national centers’ outlooks, severe weather to day eight, rainfall to day seven, and the Climate Prediction Center’s odds for the coming weeks, month and season, over a ninety-day calendar of the normal and the record for each date. No forecast has skill day by day past about two weeks, and this page does not print one.

Why is this different from the app on my phone?

Most forecast apps show a blend of models chosen by the company that makes the app. This page shows the forecast the local National Weather Service office issues, edited by the forecasters who will also issue the warnings, and it shows all of it rather than the six numbers that fit on a phone. The discussion explains the reasoning, which no app carries.

What is a place’s address here?

Every town has its own page, such as /forecast/us/oklahoma/oklahoma-city/, and every day at a town has one too. A ZIP code typed into the search goes to the town it belongs to. Any coordinate at all can be looked up, and the page names the nearest town.
